Jules Chéret (1836-1932) was a French painter, lithographer and poster artist. His most famous posters and ads often depict cheerful women, dynamic settings and clever color techniques. The late 19th century was a golden age for french ads and poster artists, including Jules Chéret, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen… Jules Chéret thrived during this period, becoming well known as a master of chromolithography ; among other techniques, his use of the crachis, an ink splattering technique, allowed him to create dynamic compositions and truly modern lithographs. His depictions of the Bal du Moulin Rouge, Loïe Fuller or the Opéra remain key figures of the poster craze of the late 1880s.
